I'm planning a trip to Egypt in November and I plan to do some diving
in the Read Sea. Any comments/advice from people who have done so would
be appreciated. Operators to check out, operators to avoid, wetsuit
recommendations, or anything else.
Thanks!

I was in Eilat, Israel at end of Feb and was just a little cool in a 3mm shortie, a
3mm full suit would have been just right. The water temp was 72 F but air was very
warm and diving was all shore diving requiring some swimming. No gloves and no
knives.

A gun. A good amount of ammo. And pray they don't take you and want to
behead you. Go down fighting. Take a few of the bastards with you.. |

Sharm el-Sheikh is well famous. We dived with Colona Divers
(www.colona.com). 5 or 7mm fullsuit, but leave your gloves and knives
at home. Hood might be nice. Be ready for some currents.
I have a short report at www.niksula.cs.hut.fi/~mdobruck/diving

Dived the Red Sea on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed excellent
diving. Two of the most famous resorts are Sharm (South Sinai peninsula) and
Hurghada (Egyptian mainland) but also worth considering are El Gouna and the
recently accessible resort of Marsa Alam in the South. Sharm is the most
'cosmopolitan' of all the Egyptian resorts with plenty of good restaurants
and shopping to keep the non-divers happy. Diving-wise, you can't go far
wrong with any of the resorts - Sharm offers easy access to the straights of
Tiran and Ras Mohammed marine reserve (ie. excellent reefs and fish life)
whilst Hurghada and El Gouna is is ideally placed for diving the great Red
Sea wrecks like the Thistlegorm, Rosalie Mollar, Carnatic and Ghiannis D.
Further South, you can find the Brothers (complete the obligatory large
pelagics like Hammerheads) and the infamous wreck of the Salam Express.
As for diving operators, I've always dived with Emperor Divers and have
never had cause to complain. To say they bend over backwards to please would
be an understatement - a top notch operation in every way!
Of course if you really want to discover the Red Sea, a liveaboard is the
only way to go - if you like wrecks, one of the many 'Northern Red Sea Wreck
Tours' is a must. We did one back in February and got about 24 dives in on
all the major northern red sea wrecks including one particularly atmospheric
night dive on the Thistlegorm (an experience not to be missed!). |
