B-04 What martial arts techniques do these characters have?
Taken directly from Curtis Hoffman's "Dragon Ball Attacks."
Notes:
Ki Means 'energy'. It is the internal energy you generate when
you attack something (as in Karate.)
Ki-ai The shout made when focussing the 'ki'.
Ha In the following attacks, 'ha' appears in the name
occasionally. While 'ha' can translate to 'wave', it is also
the ki-ai people make when focussing their bodies on an
attack. Usually, 'ha' doesn't really have meaning, it's just
a loud sound made when you're fighting.
Ken This can mean either 'fist', or 'technique.' As in Hokuto no
Ken: It can mean "Fist of the Northstar," or "Northstar
Techniques."
Fighting Styles and attacks:
From the Characters Guide, Part 1
Janken -- Actually the Japanese name for "scissors/paper/stone."
Gokuu punches (stone) and the proper counter is a block (paper.)
Scissors is a poke in the eyes.
Kamehame-ha -- A power blast. Originally, Kamesennin was the only one
that could do this, after 50 years of training. Gokuu picked it
up just by watching. (Kame means "turtle".) Jackie Chun is the
third person to have been seen using this attack. Later on, a
number of other characters start using it. Can translate to "Wave
Attack of the Turtle Sect/School," or simply "Turtle sect" + ki-ai.
(For those who missed it: Jackie Chun is actually Kamesennin in
disguise, for those times when he wants to fight in the Budoukai.
Further, Kamehameha is the name of a very famous Hawaiian King.)
Sansouken -- "One Pattern". A fake, where the attacker moves so fast
that an after-image is left behind. Gokuu has been able to leave
three images of himself. First used by Jackie Chun.
Dodon-Pa -- This actually a mimetic adjective used to describe
something that is very powerful (eg. -- That bull is dodon strong.)
This is the name Tao-pie Pie uses for his finger-blast, which
initally is more powerful than Gokuu's Kamehame-ha. Dodon can also
be used as a sound effect for an explosion (kind of like calling
your bomb a "ka-whump".)
Rouga Fuufuu Ken -- Yamcha's "Wolf Wind Attack." In volume 10, this
is replaced by Shin-Rouga Fuufuu Ken, or "New" Wolf Wind Attack.
Shiyou Ken -- Four Arms. This allows Tenshinhan to grow an extra pair
of arms from his back. Not used after his first Budoukai.
Haikyou Ken -- Tenshinhan's "Volleyball" attack. Basically, Gokuu is
tossed into the air, received, and then spiked into the ground.
Shin-tsurusen-ryuu Taiyou-ken -- This is a blinding attack used by
Tenshinhan during the Tenkaichi-budoukai. His entire body can glow
with a very intense light. Translates to "New Crane School
Sun Fist," or "Sun Technique."
Kikouhou -- "Energy cannon/bomb/shot." Another of Tenshinhan's
techniques. Requires a lot of concentration, and can be very
devastating. But, continued use of it can kill the caster, as it
uses up a lot of the person's energy each time.
Chou-nou-ryoku: "Ultimate Ability" aka -- ESP. Chau-zu can cause
people to freeze in place, levitate, etc. If he freezes someone
long enough, either their heart will stop, or they'll suffocate.
From the Characters Guide, Part 2
Makousen: "Magic (Demon) Light Beam." Demon King Piccolo's answer to
Kamehame-ha.
Mafuu-ha: "Demon Seal." Kamesennin tries to use this spell to
re-capture Demon King Piccolo. If you have a container (like a rice
cooker), you can use Mafuu-ha to force Piccolo into it, and keep him
there. The trade off is that regardless of whether you succeed, the
spell will kill its caster. Kami-sama tries to use it on Ma, Jr., but
Ma, Jr. uses Mafuu-ha Gaeshi (Mafuu-ha Return/Rebound) and Kami-sama
is captured, instead. Mafuu-fa was originally used by Kamesennin's
teacher, Mutaito, to seal up Piccolo.
Sou Ki Dan: "Energy Bomb." Yamcha's remote-controlled energy ball.
Later, Gokuu learns to remote-control his Kamehame-ha bolts.
Super Dodon-pa: A cannon blast that Tao-pie Pie uses against
Tenshinhan. Stronger than the regular Dodon attack.
Zanzou-ken: After-Image Attack. This is a technique that Ma Jr.
uses, which is basically the same thing as One Pattern.
Souki-Dan: Big inner-energy ball. Yamcha uses it against Shen.
Me no 12: Twelve Eyes. Tenshin has the ability to create 3 exact
clones of himself (actual creations, not just images.)
Chou-Kamehame-ha: "Ultimate" Kamehame-ha. Gokuu uses it for the
first time while facing Ma Junior in volume 16.
Bukuujutsu: "No Air" This is name of the technique used when
people fly around. (Used from volume 16 on up.)
Makankousappou: Piccolo's screw blast. Very powerful, but requires some
time to build up the energy, first. Translates to "Devil's penetrating
energy killing attack", but can also be treated as "Industrial Light
Magic Attack." (Used in vol. 17)
Kaiou Ken: Kaiou-sama had taught Gokuu a series of techniques ('ken')
that can raise his power, but cuts his endurance by the same
factor. There are a series of Kaiou Ken levels, that are geometric.
Genki Dama: "Life Force Sphere." Gokuu needs lots of time to gather
the energy from the living things on the planet around him. The more
energy available, the bigger the sphere. This can only be
performed in normal mode -- Super Saiya-jin can't create a Genki
Dama, but they can use the energy from it if it already exists.
It's not so much an energy attack, as it is a matter of throwing
a small star at someone.
In the final battle against Majin Buu, Gokuu receives the life energy
of people from distant solar systems, over the course of several
minutes. In this case, the people have to raise one arm, and
voluntarily give the energy to him.
From the Characters Guide, Parts 3 and 4
Ki En Zan: Kuririn's "slashing energy disc", developed to combat Nappa
and Vejiita.
Rikuum Eraser Gun: A mouth blast more powerful than most large bombs.
Crusher Ball: Jiisu's super powerful energy sphere.
Daichi Retsuzan: Freeza's Earth Cutter. A slashing energy attack.
Body Change: Ginyuu's ability to switch bodies with whoever he wants.
Shunkan-idou: The teleport ability that Gokuu learns on Yardrat. But,
he can only jump to a place where someone he knows is located
(he has to feel that person's energy to teleport to that place.)
Enerugii Kyuushuu: #19 and #20's Energy Sucking ability. Both androids
have receptors in their hands that allow them to drain the power
from humans.
Hell's Flash: #16's energy blast attack, fired from his forearms.
Shin-Kikou-hou: Tenshinhan's self-killing energy attack, with 'shin'
in front of it (shin == new.) It's argued that the new version is
not as suicidal as the old version. I say that Tenshinhan has gained
more control over how to use his power (when he uses this against
Cell as a delaying tactic, it still drains him pretty completely.)
Shi Baku: Cell's self-destructing world killing blast. Cell bloats up,
explodes, and wipes out the planet.
Seru Junia Umi Dashi: "Spitting out Junior Cells." Cell not only uses
his stinger tail to consume people -- he can spit out small,
mindless, vicious versions of himself.
From the Characters Guide, Part 5
Papparapa: (Nonsense syllables) The magic word Babi-Di uses to casts
spells.
Ankokusei: The spell Babi-Di uses to teleport people to various places
for combat.
Seki Ka Tsuha: "Turn to Stone Spit." Darbura's ability to turn people
into statues by spitting on them. This is a form of magic that is
dispelled when Darbura dies.
xxxxxx Ni Natchae: "Become xxxxx." Buu uses this to turn people into
food, which he then eats. He uses this magic to turn Darbura
into a cookie, and Chi Chi into an egg (which he steps on.)
Kamekame-ha: Goten's version of Kamehame-ha.
Satsujin Punch -- Ikousa's "Assassin's/Kill Person" punch.
Totsugeki -- Goten's diving bombing attack.
Rolling Attack -- Mr. Satan's rolling attack.
Satan Punch!!! -- What else?
Satan Miracle Special Ultra Super Megaton Punch -- Mr. Satan's best
punch. Used on #18, it has no effect. Later on,
when asked to repeat the full name for the Press,
Satan has forgotten it.
Fusion: A process that allows two people to become one. It's not
a permanent condition. It requires that the two be of near-equal
power, and that they both have a certain amount of prepping.
Includes having to go through a stupid-looking set of dance steps.
Super Saiya-jin 1: The new name for what has always been called
"Super Saiya-jin."
Super Saiya-jin 2: The new name for Chou Super Saiya-jin, or the
level beyond SSJ.
Super Saiya-jin 3: Gokuu's name for "beyond the beyond the Super
Saiya-jin." By powering up well past the "Saiya-jin level,"
Gokuu's face becomes leaner, his hair grows down to his waist
and he gets very strong. But, he's still about even with
Vejiita (when Vejiita was controlled by Babi-di,) and it's still
not enough to defeat Buu.
Dynamite Kick -- These are all standards punches and
Rolling Thunder Punch kicks, with new names devised by
Inoshishi (wild boar) Attack Gotenks
Power Tackle
Miracle Super Punch
Great Kick Special
Magnum Thunder
Ultra Miracle Parfait
Hyper Plasma Short Cake
Galactica Donut -- Gotenks' encircling, crushing energy ring.
Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack - Gotenks spits out a ghost of himself.
The ghosts explode on impact, which can
then do damage and drain you of energy.
Renzoku Super Donuts -- (Continuous Super Donuts.) This is like
Galactica Donut, with four contracting
energy rings being shot out, instead of
just one.
B-05 Why does Goku have a tail?
As far as the DB anime series goes, it is a mystery why Goku has a
tail. Later on, in DBZ, we find out that Goku is an alien, of the
warrior race known as "Saiya." All Saiyajin have tails, which is one
of the requirements for turning into a were-monkey. More on the
subject of "Saiya" will be covered in question B-11.
B-06 How can Goku turn into a were-monkey?
Goku is a Saiyajin, and all Saiyajins have the ability to turn into a
were-monkey, provides that the said Saiyajin has a tail, and that
there is a full moon.
We were lucky enough to get Prince Vegeta to give us the official and
scientific explaination:
"Moonlight is sunlight reflected by the moon... but only the light
reflected by the moon contail 'Buruz' wave... The amount of Buruz
wave surpasses 17,000,000 units.
When a Saiyajin receives over 17,000,000 units of Buruz wave, it
interacts with the tail, and the transformation begins.
There are many planets in the universe that have moons, but for some
unknown reason, regardless of the size of the moon, only a full moon
can produce more than 17,000,000 unites of Buruz wave."
B-07 What happened to Goku's tail?
Goku's tail was cut off by Pooaru early on in the series. It later
grew back during a Tenkaichi Budokai. This newly grown tail also came
off when Son Gohan (Goku's grandfather) tugged it too hard on the one
day he was able to come back to earth. It grew back once again,
during his own training between then and the next Tenkaichi Budokai.
When Goku went to train under Kami-sama, Kami-sama wanted to restore
earth's moon, so he permanently removed Goku's tail to avoid any more
problems.
B-08 what were the results of the different Tenkaichi Budoukai(s)?
First, an explaination of the name "Tenkaichi Budoukai."
"Tenkaichi Budoukai" is written completely in kanji; if we separate
the romaji according to each kanji, it would look like this:
"Ten Ka Ichi Bu Dou Kai"
For those with even rudimentry Japanese, you should be able to
recognize that "Ichi" means "one." Here's a word-by-word translation:
Ten - Sky, Heaven
Ka - Beneath, under
Ichi - [Number] One
Bu - Martial Arts, fighting technique
Dou - Way of
Kai - Meeting
"Tenka" (Under heaven) is used to refer to "the world," as everything
in this world is beneath the skies / under heaven.
"Budou" means martial arts, or "the way (art) of fighting."
Putting the rest together, a fairly concise translation of "Tenkaichi
Budoukai" would be "The World's Best Martial Artist Tournament."
Results of the first three Tenkaichi Budoukai's that appeared in the
manga/anime can also be in section B-02.
The 21nd Tenkaichi Budoukai:
Champion: Jackie Chung (Kamesennin)
Runner-up: Son Gokuu
The 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai:
Champion: Tenshinhan
Runner-up: Son Gokuu
The 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai:
Champion: Son Gokuu
Runner-up: Ma Junior (Piccolo)
The Cell Game:
Champion: Son Gohan
The 24th Tenkaichi Budoukai:
Champion: Mr. Satan
The 25th Tenkaichi Budoukai:
Adult Division Champion: Mr. Satan
Adult Division Runner-up: No. 18
Children Division Champion: Chibi Trunks
Children Division Runner-up: Son Goten
In all the tournaments to follow, Mr. Satan is the champion, while Mr.
Buu is the runner-up.. Basically Mr. Satan cheats in letting Mr. Buu
fight with everyone else first, and then to throw the match to Mr.
Satan.
B-09 What are the rules/restrictions of the Dragon Balls?
1. Must gather all seven Dragon Balls.
2. Chant required (Come out, Shen Lon, and grant my wish!).
3. Only one wish per summoning of Shen Lon.
4. After the wish is made, Shen Lon will disappear, the Dragon Balls
will turn to stone and scatter themselves; they will remain stone
for one year.
5. The Shen Lon cannot grant any wishes that are beyond the powers of
the creator of the Dragon Balls.
6. You can revive anyone or any group of people who fit a certain
criteria, if they did not die of natural causes.
7. If a person has been revived by Shen Lon before, the person cannot
be revived again.
B-10 What are the rules/restrictions of Namek's Dragon Balls?
1. Must gather all seven Dragon Balls.
2. Chant required in the Namek language.
3. Wishes must be said in the Namek language.
4. Only three wishes per summoning of Puronga.
5. After the wishes are made, Puronga will disappear, the Dragon Balls
will turn to stone and scatter themselves; they will remain stone
for 130 days.
6. Puronga cannot grant any wishes that are beyond the powers of the
creator of the Dragon Balls.
7. You can revive anyone multiple times, as long as he/she did not
die of natural causes.
8. You can only revive one person per wish.
B-11 What does "Saiya" mean?
In Japanese, "Yasai" means "vegetables."
In the manga and anime, however, the characters are somehow oblivious
to that fact, and "Saiya" is just a name, without any real meanings,
aside from the fact that the "Saiyajin" ("jin" means "person" or
"people"; "Saiyajin" can also be referred to as "Saiyan," which is
the Englishlized version) is a warrior race, because they are a
warrior race, they stay much longer in their prime years, and that
when they receive the reflected light from a full moon, it interacts
with their tail (if they have their tails), allowing them to transform
into giant were-monkeys. Another interesting fact is that a pure
Saiyajin's hair stays at a fixed length (and style) since birth.
There is also the legend of a "Super Saiyajin"...
Another note about Saiya is that it is NOT the name of the planet
Saiyajins come from. Saiya is the name of the race, and presumably
the region of land the Saiyajin originally inhabited on Planet Vegeta.
Just like the fact that I'm a Chinese, but I am not from a planet
called China.
B-12 What is a "Super Saiyajin"?
"Super Saiyajin" is a legend passed down among the Saiyajin, of a
genius fighter among the Saiyajin, who comes along only once in every
thousand years. It is said that the Super Saiyajin is cruel and
powerful; so powerful, in fact, that there can be no one stronger in
the universe.
B-13 What are the qualifications for a "Super Saiyajin"?
After a Saiyajin becomes a Super Saiyajin, he becomes aware of how he
reached such a state of being, and so this is how we know the
qualifications of a Super Saiyajin...
1. Must be at least partly Saiyajin.
2. Must possess at least enough power to potentially surpass the
limits of a common Saiyajin.
3. Must be pure/have a pure heart.
4. Extreme rage triggers the realization of being a Super Saiyajin.
5. After the first transformation into a Super Saiyajin, the trans-
formation becomes relatively easier each additional time.
B-14 How is Freeza defeated?
In becoming a Super Saiyajin, Goku becomes much more powerful than
Freeza. After a fist-fight, Goku decides the fight is getting boring.
Freeza throws two homing Kienzans, one eventually slices himself in
half. However, Freeza survives the ordeal, and comes back as a
cyborg. He rushes to earth with his father to kill off everyone there
before Goku reaches earth. In the original timeline, Goku teleports
off his space capsule and kills Freeza. In the timeline that we
follow, however, Trunks shows up and dices Freeza, and then kills King
Cold, Freeza's father. (Trunks is a Super Saiyajin from the future,
BTW.)
B-15 How can Vegeta become a Super Saiyajin?
Referring back to question B-13, Vegeta satisfies both the first and
second qualifications easily. As for the third and fourth rule:
Vegeta: "I _am_ pure... Pure EVIL!!"
(or "I _do_ have a pure heart... It's just pure evil!!")
After seeing Trunks and Goku in Super Saiyajin mode, Vegeta not only
realizes the level of power of a Super Saiyajin, but also the fact
that there can be more than one Super Saiyajin at one time. Vegeta's
been trying to reach (and surpass) the power level of a Super
Saiyajin ever since. However, while he was training in the artificial
gravity room, he realized that he has reached his limit, yet is still
signifigantly weaker than a Super Saiyajin. Vegeta became enraged
with himself, which in turns triggers his change into a Super Saiyajin.
