A-0 GENERAL QUESTIONS
A-01 What is "Dragon Ball"?
"Dragon Ball" was a manga (Japanese for "comics") series that started
in 1984 by artist Akira Toriyama (who also did the art designs of
video games such as "Dragon Warrior" and "Chrono Trigger"), published
in the popular weekly manga phonebook "Shonen Jump." It was shortly
afterwards slated to be turned into anime (Japanese for "cartoon"),
and began airing on Japanese television on Feb 26, 1986. A US dubbed
version began airing on syndicated television Fall, 1995. The story
tells of a young boy, who was raised by a great martial artist, and
strangely, has a tail. The young boy was named "Son Goku" by his
adoptive grandfather (Son Gohan). Goku and his friends search for a
set of pearls known as Dragon Balls, which can summon a wish-granting
dragon (ShenLon) when gathered, Goku's original reason for helping
Bulma was to see what ShenLon looked like. After ShenLon was summoned
and a wish was made, the Dragon Balls scattered, so Goku had to go on
a second quest to recover the Dragon Ball his grandfather left him.
The manga has ended already, and there is a total of 42 volumes of
tankoban, with a total of 519 episodes, and one Trunks special
(Trunks: The Story).
Dragon Ball was very loosely based on the Chinese novel "The Monkey
King."
A-02 What's the difference between "Dragon Ball" and "Dargon Ball Z"?
While the manga series has always been called "Dragon Ball," the anime
series took a turn in the naming. Six years after Goku first embarked
on his quest, Goku had already saved the world with his martial arts
ability. After Goku trained under Kami-sama (god) and defeated
Piccolo Daimaoh's (grand demon king?) reincarnation at the Tenkaichi
Budokai (World's Best Martial Arts Tournament), Kami-sama offered Goku
to be his successor. Goku refused, and flew off on his Kinto-cloud
(US dub--Flying Nimbus). This marked the end of the anime Dragon Ball
series (note: the manga continued!).
With the manga still continuing (and selling well), the anime studios
decided to pick up Dragon Ball again, but since it (the anime) has
ended, the new anime series was named "Dragon Ball Z." Please note
that the manga should never be referred to as "Dragon Ball Z," since
only the anime series took on the change in name. While you may find
some color manga titled "Dragon Ball Z," they are not really manga,
but pictures from anime movies and specials compiled into manga
format.
A-03 Why are there so many different spellings for the characters?
Because the names were in Japanese, so there's not really any right or
wrong spellings using the roman alphabet. There are four or five
commonly accepted ways to romanize Japanese, so it's not really
worthwhile to argue over spelling as long as we know who we're
talking about.

translations to <Goshou@aol.com>.
Additional credits for this section (from Steph) goes to:
Steve Pearl- The compiler of the Anime CD Cyclopedia. From him is
taken some of the information and formatting. With out his effort,
I wouldn't have the collection I do today.

"Once there was true love in front of me, but I didn't know to treasure
it, now all I have is remorse; such a thing is one of the greatest
tragedies in life. If I could go back and redo it all, I would tell
her I love her. If I am forced to place a time limit for this love, I
wish for it to be--Ten thousand years." --A Chinese Odyssey |
