Does anyone here make their own fonts? What programs are the best for making
them?

I don't but the people I know that do make their own fonts like
Fontlab...

We do indeed but it may be a bit cryptict for a beginner. But on the other hand you don't have to start with OpenType scripting.

Reading is good. For example Walter Tracy's 'Letters of Credit and Robert Bringhurst's The Elements od Typographics style are good starting points for a type design beginner.
