Does anyone have any good ideas on how to fix read errors on old floppy
disks?

They worked back then but seem to have taken some damage during 20 years of
none-use.

Cleaning the disk drive's head, repeatedly

Do I remember correctly: isopropyl alcohol is recommended, right?

"Washing" the disk

With soap water (how much soap; plain only or anti-bacterial also
allowed), plain water or distilled water?

yes. and if you can, get "pure" (99.9%) alcohol (usually isopropanol is only
70%). and by all means dont use acetone, unless you want to dissolve the
r/w head =P

no, avoid water completely - use alcohol (yes really)

this depends. Personally I often use isopropyl, but I always
do it with great care to not rub away the topmost surface
binding the magnetic particles. If you rub to heavily, your
tip gets browny and the magnetic surface becomes thinner.

When using water, I would recommend to take demineralized or
purified water, otherwise chalkstains may reside on the
surface after cleaning the disk.

Over here:

the guy used chlorine cleaner without additional water, this
may work also.
