Hi folks:
I am one of the makers of the X transfer cables, but I have no experience
with some of the floppy drives, expecially adding the parallel ports with
the 15 pin connectors. Around my neck of the woods, I've only seen 1 or 2
of each of the 1541C, 1541-II and 1571's. The regular 1541's (long and
short board) are no problem.
Are there any people here who have added parallel ports to these drives,
either for use on your C64, or for transferring files with MNIB and SC?
Can you take pictures for me, so I can confirm what is needed, and where
to solder the parallel cable, to add the parallel port to these drives?
I want to add this info to my parallel port web page, so it covers more
drive types.

Uhm, Womo and Nicolas Welte helped me with collecting such data quite
comprehensively at http://sta.c64.org/cbmpar.html .  Notes:
- The 15-pin connector was just a simple solution, using a connector
that can be bought in any electronics shop, of at least 10 lines (8
data lines plus 1-1 handshake in both directions).
- The description of how to find the VIA#1 chip was the simplest we
could come up with, without listing all existing drive types
separately.
- Also, there's a short description on how to "prepare" the VIA#1 chip
for the parallel connection.
Please, feel free to lift any information you need. Womo, do you have
some more comments? |

Yes, Peter reported that one, too. It's just a typo (or copy & paste
mistake): the pin numbers are correct but they belong to Port B (not
Port A). Fixed.
Womo, what exactly is connected to Port A to the CIA in 1571 drives?
I'm sure you've explained it to me before but I neither remember it
nor can find it in my notes. |

The only additional recommendation that is
of some use would be to have a look into
the schematics for all the drive types:
* VIC-1540/41, VC-1541, 1541, 1541-A-1, 1541-A-2
* 1541B (internal CBM name) aka 1541C

track-0 light barrier

Personally, I have built parallel cables for the
1541, 1541-A-1/2, 1541-II, 1571 and 1570 drives.
In the 1980'ties I used descriptions from old
computer magazines that mentioned the pin-2-fix
for the 1541C and 1541-II.
After I started using the Star Commander, together
with Nicolas Welte we figured out, how Burstnibbler
made use of parallel cable equipped 1571 drives.
So, the only drive I did not test on my own is a
1541C disk drive. Probably this is the most
complicated one to equip with a parallel cable
because it also needs a ROM update.

Joe,
That would be great if I wanted a parallel connection from the drive to my cbm computer.
The original question addressed using MNIB (1571 to PC), not making a parallel cable from the drive
to a cbm computer.
The goal is to get the XAP cable to work with MNIB.
After recovering from the typo's on the instruction page, http://sta.c64.org/parport71c.html, I
thought I had it figured it.
Seem more and more to be pointing to a problem on the PC setup.
