FWIW, XP may have already had drivers on your system, rather than
d/l'ing them. I recently connected a gamepad to an XP system and it
installed drivers for it automatically, with no Internet connection. I
don't think that kind of gamepad had been connected to it before. XP
just seemed to already have the drivers on hand. Perhaps because XP
was pre-installed on the system - Maybe all the drivers were
pre-loaded. The point is, trying to install the modem again with no
Internet connection may not make any difference. Still, I suppose it'd
be worth a try if nothing else worked.
Are the XP drivers "good enough"? I have no idea. But if the modem
instructions say to install their drivers, I guess you should at least
try. If you want to install the drivers on the CD, here are a couple
thoughts:
1) What happens if you simply put the CD in the computer? It may very
well start an installation procedure that will let you install the
drivers. Just watch what it's doing and make sure it doesn't install
other stuff you don't want. (That's just a general rule of thumb. A
lot of CDs have other stuff included. Some of it you may be interested
in. Other stuff you may not.)
2) If that doesn't work, try updating the drivers. For example, go to
Control Panel, find the modem (you may have to dig down a level or two),
select the modem and go to Properties (there may be a Properties button
or you may have to right-click and select Properties from the list), go
to the Drivers tab and select Update Drivers. I haven't tried this on
an XP system, but I assume it will let you tell it where to find the
drivers. Point it to the appropriate directory on the CD.
