The spouse of an Electronics Arts employee details what it's like to
be married to someone that works 80+ hours a week for months on end:

To those of you in the industry, this likely doesn't come as a
surprise. Hopefully, by shedding light on how the companies do this,
we can bring about some change. |

The lawsuits have already started to fly. And the big companies are
going to get it in the neck first. Not because they are unusually bad,
but because they have a lot of money that really ought to be going up
the noses of legal professionals. ;)
It's not just a problem in the games industry: it's a general problem
of bad people management. If companies (or shareholders) learned that
their own management were actively reducing their profits, we might see
some change.
Until then, managers will attempt to cover for their lack of people
management skills by burning the companies' source of income: their
staff. It's not easy to manage people well. It is, however, very easy
to manage them badly. |
