I know this group is for helping in use of the access but hoping to
find some help on installing '97. Recently purchased laptop w\ XP Home.
Have installed '97 on several other computers over the years w\ no
problems, however now get a message that "Access 97 has searched the
hard disk and cannot find necessary files ,etc" Do have original 97
Office disk & original Access97 upgrade disk. Word\Excel 97 installed &
work just fine. Have downloaded & installed Office service packs 1 & 2
but stil unable to install Access. Did find a MS knowledge base
bulletin (ID # 167589) indicating that there is a known problem that MS
Access CCP does not recognize Office 97 but the resolution is to
contact cusomter support. Since they do NOT support this product
anymore I am turning to experts here to possibly help or direct me to
what I should do to solve this issue. Sorry for the overly long post.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You will need the Access install CD in the drive to install the service
pack.

When installing Access97 on systems with newer versions of Office (most), I
follow these steps.
1) Search the drive for MSACCESS.EXE and rename it if found. (This would be
a newer version of Access or runtime)
2) Search the drive for the HATTEN.TTF font and rename it if found.
3) Install Access
4) Run SR2CHK.EXE to see if I can or need to install service pack 2
5) If NO: install service pack 1 "SR1OFF97.EXE"
6) Run SR2CHK.EXE to double check
7) Install service pack 2: "SR2BOF97.EXE"
Cool Install Jet3.5 service pack 3: "Jet35sp3.exe"
9) Rename of delete the HATTEN.TTF font installed by Access97
10) Rename the MSACCESS.EXE back to it's original name. (Unless you don't
want or need to use the newer version)
11) Run and test Access97

The 1st 2 steps I found searching this group for installing multiple version
of Access.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately none of your suggestons solved
the issue. Neither file mentioned in lines #1 or #2 was found on the
drive. Unable to do line#3 because the attempt to install hangs & gives
the message that "cannot find files needed to install the upgrade of
Access97." As mentioned earlier, I have installed this upgrade to my
version of Office97 on other computers including one w\ XP Pro & had no
problems until this laptop installation. Hopefully someone will have
some additonal informaton or suggestions for me to try. Once again,
thanks again for your reply.

But do you have an Office 95 Pro, Access 95 or Access 2.0 CD/floppy drive handy?
That's what the A97 upgrade CD is looking for.

I always find HATTEN.TTF in the fonts folder.
Turn on "Show Hidden Files and Folders" in Windows Explorer and search
again.

Try installing using an Administrator account.

Thanks for your response. I was using an Administrator acct but didn't

help. As an update to the problem, however, I found a couple of posts
on this subject using google search & finally bit the bullet & ordered
a used version of Office 97 PRO VERSION. There are apparently many of
these in original jewel case & boxes available for cheap via ebay
\amazon etc. This version includes a stand alone, not upgrade, of
Access 97 which installed perfectly on the 1st try.
I may be wrong but I think the problem I was having was trying to
install the upgrade of Access97 on a XP HOME machine. My previous
installation involved XP PRO on which there was no problem. In any
event for someone else out there that may run into this , just get a
used version of Office Pro. Thanks again for your responses.
