I am using Access 2007 and am puzzled by the form and report design
tab.
No matter what I do the gridlines group remains greyed out (disabled)
Has anyone had any experience with this.
By the way, Access help is next to useless for this and most other
searches.
Also there is no way to refine a search as in previous versions.
Where has the index search gone?
But I'm starting to ramble.....

Try creating a form with the wizard. You see that the gird option you speak
of don't apply to displaying or hiding the grid. That "grid" option is to
setup the "new" grid lines for the new control "layout" formatting feature
an access 2007. In other words that grid line option is grayed out and
unless the contorl you select on the form is PART OF an controll layout,
then the grid option will remain gray out.

Save for another post, but learning about the new control formatting in
access 2007 is a really an important concept and it key to a new level of
productivity of creating forms and reports in access.

If you're looking to toggle on display of the grid behind the form, then
bring up a form in design mode, and in the arrange tab in the ribbon, On the
far right you'll see a group called show/hide. it is in this group that you
can toggle display of the rulers, or in your case toggle display of the
background grid.

Because of the new control layout features, I've now turn the grids off, and
I've also turn the rulers off and this results in less clutter and a cleaner
display for the during development.

However, the options are still there for those that have been used to this
feature for years and like it, or simply need/like the grid display during
the design phase of a form.

Thanks Albert
I see what you mean.
I haven't used the new layout feature yet.
I've avoided that learning curve by continuing with the old way of
working with objects.
If as you say it helps productivity, I should give it some attention
soon.

Further to my other comment about Access07 help.
Is it just me or is Access07 help somewhat wanting.
For instance if I type a key word into the search box, I usually get
an extensive list of topics that from the title don't seem, for the
most, to have much to do with the topic I am trying find help on. I
have to open each topic to scroll through to try and find references
to the search word I typed in. All that comes up in the left pane is a
general table of contents.
What happened to the context and index search result panes of earlier
Access products?

Personally, I think the "Help" feature in Access hasn't worked right
since Access 97, but then again, these days we have the internet where
you can find help on just about anything! (If you're smart, you start
looking in *this* newsgroup!)

It took me some time to get used to the fact that I had to choose
where I launched HELP, from the Access window or from the VBE,
because where you start from determines whether or not you'll find
what you're looking for. This is a regression in functionality, in
my opinion, as in A97 and before, you didn't have to know which help
file the answer you needed was in, but from A2000 on, you do.

I've had fairly good results with A2003 help, once I turned off the
Internet part of it (which was always worse than useless).

Publish Word docs to the internet. Use a DAP in Access. The internet
is now an extension of Windows. Hurray! Talk about embrace, extend
and extinguish Smile ! And, for extra credit, I'm even close to
Halloween. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Halloween_documents_leak

I guess everything had to fit into the thème de l'année. That's about
the only explanation I have for MS enabling such incongruous tools for
internet purposes and for using the internet to obtain help
information. At least internet help can be edited easily. To their
credit, Microsoft did provide a freely downloadable app called the
Answer Wizard Builder (It was also part of the Windows XP Resource
Kit) for providing custom help to users. Viz:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/XPddl.htm

under

Office Resource Kit Tools
OrkTools.exe

BTW, the Ork part is just a coincidence.
