Hi All,

Waiting for departure to Berlin..., a lot of information and
resources to share in the DNG workshop Tarvisio/09...

We are totally focused on companies that need smalltalk power
to make more money from their products, and not investing time yet
to help people that think in how to reduce their costs of software
development (working to put money in your hands).
Under this point of view a robust and eficient VM is a must,
but it is also important to have modern frameworks implemented
and running as a competitive product requires today.

During the workshop we will work hands-on this topics (*):
- Update report (what is new since April/09)
- Round0: VSE & Dolphin6 running in our VM.
-- How to join migration plan to upgrade at low costs,
without violating licenses nor hacking obsolete platforms.
- DNG Licenses
-- DNG collaborators and workgroups
- Benchmarking DNG VM
- Frameworks running in DNG
-- Web development tools
-- Fuzzy Objects framework
-- Computer Vision, Image and Video analysis.
-- PDF contents processing.
-- Game Programming with DNG.
- Applications under development and running in DNG
-- Pollution Control using Nanotechnology, DNG
and Fuzzy Objects (Commune di Milano - Italy)
-- Other...
- Security in our VM and security at application level.
- Integration with modern development platforms.
- Plans for Round1 and release 1.0

(*) I removed from list some topics that are confidential
and will be published in our web page at DNG release time.

A lot of arguments to join the workshop and learn to exploit
the power of our new Smalltalk platform.

see you in Tarvisio, or later Wink
Ale.

Is there gonna be an explanation of what "DNG" is, or are you just
going to keep using that abbreviation...

aleReimondo> [8 more instances of DNG, with no explanation]

Well, there's my answer.

I'm *guessing* it has something to do with Smalltalk though, by the group
name.

Fail.

It appears to be non-disclosure completely.

There is neither much info available, nor a demo version.

DNG => Dolphin Next Generation.

Dolphin => elegant and beautiful implementation of Smalltalk for
Windows.

hope that helps, though I guess it was not that hard to find this
information anyway.

If you were *really* interested in what DNG stands for ... rather than
just complaining about the poster ... I'm sure it would have taken
rather less time to Google first "DNG" (nada) and then, following your
hunch, "DNG Smalltalk" (plenty of hits).

Regular readers of this group should have seen several posts relating to
DNG and this workshop and just last week it was explained that DNG
stands for "Dolphin Next Generation". Non-regular readers should have a
bit more tolerance and be prepared to search for information to complete
their knowledge. After all, each reference to Squeak and VisualWorks
here isn't followed by an explanatory abstract.

That's because they've been around for a long time. If you're pushing
a new project, you should be less acronym-city until the thing is clearly
established.

I'm sure IBM was "international business machines" for many years before
everyone could start calling them "IBM".

Still fail, even in explanation. :)

DNG to us photographers is Adobe's Digital Negative format, so there's also
overlapping acronyms to deal with.

Most actual Dolphin users seem to be very enthusiatic about DNG without

knowing details.
The announcements so far don't seem to focus on Dolphin users but VSE
customers. I haven't seen any information about the price but with the
audience of VSE customers it sounds like $$$.

Disregarding the costs there is still one thing that bothers me:
reliability of support and availability. Dolphin is a very nice
Smalltalk system but it lacks a reliable release management.
Object Arts announced to stop further development of Dolphin some time
ago because of low sales volume. At least you can still buy licenses if
you need. But there hasn't been a bug fix release for nearly two years.
The latest release is still a beta and there was just an announcement
for a new release "real soon now" some months ago.

I really hope that DNG will be affordable and won't suffer from similar
problems.

In one of the very early posts about DNG Andy said ...

"At present, no pricing structure has been set for the new platform.
However, following its release we still intend to continue to keep the
current Dolphin products (DPRO and DCE) in existence. Hence, the Next
Generation Dolphin environment will likely be positioned at a price
point above that of the existing Dolphin Professional product."
