Vista Ingres Netutil 9.3 connection test hangs, why...

I've recently installed a "typical" Ingres 9.2 client on Vista for the
first time. I created a new vnode in netutil using IIPROMPTALL for
the username and * for the password (as used on previous Ingres
versions, with older versions of windows). However the connection
test with <SHIFT-F5> just hangs for several minutes on this slow
laptop, with the "ivm" process using some CPU resource. Knowing how
difficult older versions of netutil were, it is quite possible that I
have misconfigured it somehow. I intend to re-test soon by deleting
and re-creating the vnode again.

Apart from that obvious possibility, are there any other potential
issues with netutil (particularly for modern versions compatible with
Vista) that might cause the connection test to hang?

Thanks in advance, L Jackson.

Hi L Jackson,

Are you starting the Ingres installation as a service? If so, and if
this is a client installation then try to change the system account and
check the 'interact with the desktop' box. This will allow the dialog
box to be displayed on the currently active desktop.

Let us know if it does any help.

Regards

Luiz

Hi,
It sounds like you may be starting ingres as a service but have not
chosen "System Account and checked "Interact with the Desktop" box.
You will need to do that in order for the IIPROMPTALL to succeed and
not hang.
Let me know if this works.
Regards,
Divya

Thanks for that suggestion. I re-created the vnode from scratch (I
think it may have been incorrect), configured the Ingres service on
the local user account to "Interact with the desktop" and rebooted the
laptop.

A subsequent attempt to test the netutil connection with an account
registered with Ingres on the server generated a "Partial
incompatibility with Windows" error message from Vista.

Following Vista prompts to work round that I got a "connection failed"
message from Netutil and the following entry in the local errrlog.log
file:

L048617 ::[II\COMSVR\c48 , 3144 , 00000001]: Thu
Oct 08 14:42:13 2009 E_CL2781_GC_CONNECT_FAIL An attempted network
connection failed
L048617 ::[II\COMSVR\c48 , 3144 , 00000001]:
socket() failed with operating system error 11004 (The requested name
is valid, but no data of the requested type was found.)

Why is the Ingres 9.2 client software partly incompatible with Vista
and what can I do about that?

Why is there a continuing issue with Netutil, even when Vista is
cajoled into working with Netutil?

Thanks in advance, L Jackson.

Hi,
That error mostly occurs if the port Ingres is listening at is blocked
by firewall.
Please check for code E_GC2815 in the ingres errlog.log on Server.
That will give you the port Ingres Net is listening at.
Make surethis port is opened and not blocked by firewall.
Thanks,
Divya

Hi Divya

Thanks for that suggestion.

Ingres 9.2 Netutil won't connect to a database that is already
accessible from XP PCs. That rules out any possible firewall issue at
the server end of the connection. I am going to investigate possible
Vista security settings and any possible firewalls between the laptop
and the server (although I can't see why a firewall would only block a
connection from Vista and not from XP).

Any further suggestions would be welcome.

Regards, L Jackson.
