Hi all
In out country there is a questionary survey result says 70% are using
OS's file system or other volume manager like LVM.
I wonder what storage manager does everyone use worldwide with Oracle
productive database system.
Q. What are you using with Oracle database?
A: ASM
B: File System
C: Other storage manager: ( Write here )
Thanks. |

The company that I work for uses both ASM and file system. There are
several databases and ASM is used on the 3 RAC configurations while the
file system is used on non-RAC configurations. The file system is Ext3.
Versions are ranging from 10.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.1, the latter being a test
database.

Sadly, I'm in a Windows environment. Currently we use the file system
with our databases but are considering using ASM for our new 11g
databases.
Is this something you'd recommend against, Noons?
Cheers,

Don't know. Haven't yet touched 11g in Windows, can't say how stable it is.
With 10g, I'd think long and hard about using ASM in that environment: the list
of bug reports and fixes is quite extensive on anything outside Linux.
Call me weird but I get very nervous when bugs fixed in 10.2.0.3 and .4 include
expressions like "inaccessible device", "data loss", "crash" and other such.
It doesn't mean it can't be done. Just requires careful wading through lists of
bug fixes in the chosen OS for the latest release, then investigation if there
are backports of patches. Unfortunately we have to do this: Oracle doesn't.
However like I said: that's with 10g. 11g might well be a more stable beast.
Or so I'm told. |

We do not want to use ASM because it is an additional overhead. We have
mixed big and small databases for the same applications on Windows servers.
We have made our utility program for adding tablespaces etc so most of the
installations are very similar.
