Ciao,
Peter "Not so much DSP these days" K.
Whenever I think about Gareth and his posts (and his "blacklist"), I'm
reminded about the old song "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-
haaa!"
Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees
And begged you not to leave
Because I'd go berserk?
Well. . .
You left me anyhow
And then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone
Completely out of my mind

They're coming to take me away, HO HO HEE HEE HA HA
To the funny farm

You thought it was a joke
And so you laughed
You laughed when I had said
That losing you would make me flip my lid
Right. . .
You know you laughed, I heard you laugh
You laughed, you laughed and laughed
And then you left
But now you know I'm utterly mad!
And. . .
They're coming to take me away, HA HA
They're coming to take me away, HO HO HEE HEE HA HA
To the happy home
With trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile
And twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!
I cooked your food
I cleaned your house
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind, unselfish loving deeds?!!
Hah. . .
Well you just wait
They'll find you yet
And when they do they'll
Put you in the ASPCA, you mangy mutt!
And. . .
They're coming to take me away, HA HA
They're coming to take me away, HO HO HEE HEE HA HA

Minor nit: e.Bob did the blacklist. Gareth (aka, Beanie) wasn't that
creative. e.Bob was in California, Gareth in the UK.
Credit where credit is due and all that. ;)
I wish both of 'em the best. Lots of similarities between those two, IMHO.
And I do remember the song. I thought it was a bit creepy when I was a kid.

Nope, Napoleon XIV (a one-hit wonder as far as I know).

Is it not the case that "Beanie" highlighted some fundamental error
present in most textbooks relating to sampling, and merely stuck
to his guns, finally arriving at a solution 2 or 3 years ago?
Is it not also the case that a number of the regular contributors, many
of whom were gratuitously unpleasant to "Beanie" had also expressed
concern upon that very point some years before Beanie's appearance
on the scene? |

No. IIRC, he claimed that the sampling theorem was invalid because
impulses can't physically exist.

of whom were gratuitously unpleasant to "Beanie" had also expressed

No. The claim was (and is) that impulses have dimension that, if ignored
require the gratuitous introduction ov magical factors.
Jerry
That's my recollection as well, that he was hung up about the
abstraction of a certain impulse mathematical model not being realizable
(or something, maybe it was an inconsistency with another model, I don't
remember) and therefore many fundamental theories (such as sampling)
were, he thought, therefore wrong.
Despite many people here (and several on forums other than comp.dsp)
trying to guide him around his error, his insistence grew to the point
of hysteria, in my estimation. Like e.Bob, he then resorted to regular,
and very predictable, character assassination, which seems to be the
modus operandi of such people (e.g., most recently Jimmy J).
I'm trying to remember whether it was Gareth or e.Bob that started
calling people's employers and complaining about their behavior toward
him on comp.dsp. I thought that was pretty desperate.
I think that was Gareth. English defamation laws are pretty severe. Rte
word was that he was jailed for a while.

That was my understanding as well, that he had to go away for a while,
