3d Software for kids...

Hi all

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post, but I was wondering if
anyone knows of 3D software suitable for use by kids? I am looking for
something pretty simple that does scene rendering, i.e.
- 3DS import
- allows simple placement, rotation etc
- simple texturing
- rendering to 2D image

I tried a number of programs, but most were either too advanced (even
for me! - but I'm not a CG pro at all) or had obvious flaws, broken
import code, etc.

I have tried SketchUp, Blender (headache material), K-3D, Seamless3D
(how can I import 3DS?), Art of Illusion, Frog3D (pretty close, but
export seemed broken).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ryan

You could have a look at mine... tell me what you think.

PS: There should be a new version in the next couple of
weeks with better modelling oparations (easier creation
of the basic shapes, boolean operations, etc.).

PS: My email address is above - just remove the socks.

Well, on first glance, it's a LOT closer to what I was looking for, so
keep up the good work!

I tried importing a couple of .3ds shapes, which seemed to work well.
Then, I tried an object (.obj) with a texture file (.tga):
http://www.sharecg.com/v/16125/3D-Model/Castle:-Low-poly-RTS-game-building

I couldn't work out how to render the shape with the textures. I could
enable the texture map, drop it into the GUI, but it wasn't rendering
the textures at all.

I had a look and there's no material definitions inside
the .obj file. It's easy to make the material though,
just go to the material editor, enable the texture and
drop "castle.tga" where it says 'Drop Image Here'.

I made a video showing how to do it:

Okay - well that's support above and beyond the call of duty :)

That is basically what I tried. It didn't seem to work in the 1.1
version I downloaded. The Materials tab updated with the texture, but
the rendered model stayed untextured. Clicking "Apply material" didn't
do anything.
