Windows 9.3 client...

I have dloaded what I thought was the 32-Bit Windows 9.3 Community
package and cannot seem to find the Windows client within, it seems to
be Unix only.

Can anyone point me in the right direction either within the package
or externally to a Vista complaint community client.

Hi,

The Windows Client package is not available as a standalone install
package. The Windows Client is a component of the full Ingres Windows
package available at http://tinyurl.com/lp6qjc or a more recent
community version at http://tinyurl.com/kvmf6f

What are the licensing implications of using a "Community Version" in
production?

The community version is released under GPL version 2. There seem to be
several legal interpretations of what that means, and I'm not a legal
expert, but I believe that unless you intend to re-distribute any
software you are using in conjunction with Ingres outside your company,
you don't need to worry about it. It would however be worth noting that
Ingres Corp. does not offer support for the community version, so you
would be advised not to use it in production since if anything goes
wrong there will be no-one there to help out.

Not precisely; you won't get any official help from Ingres Corp, but the
community will help you. And unless things have changed, the community
in this case also includes Ingres Corp personnel. So you won't be
entirely cut off. You will get a kind of best-effort support (provided
the community feels like it and it isn't too much trouble and you've
always been nice).

Depends what the bug is. I take significant interest in server
bugs, and I'll fix them if I can find 'em. (and the community version
will see those fixes.) Bugs in interfacing layers, though,
are boring and tedious and I can't be bothered. :-)

I'm not seriously disagreeing with Steve though. The community
version is constantly receiving updates, fixes, and improvements;
and at the moment there is no serious mechanism for setting aside
stabilized versions for people to run production on. (and it would
be up to the external community to do that; it's not something
that Ingres Corp has a vested interest in doing.) If you
need a DBMS to run your business, you should be willing
to put at least a few dollars behind that need, and Ingres
Corp's certified Ingres is one of the best deals around.

hehe...O.K. that's true, but I wouldn't want to run my production
system that way. Of course one of the key values of support is the
ability to get a patch when you find a bug...unless there are clever
people with lots of time on their hands, you won't be getting any of
those out of the community :)

I guess the point here is that the community version is good to play
with, do testing with, or to use for development, but you would be crazy
to run a production system on it.

Of course there always has to be an exception to the rule.
