6. ability to insert tabular data, diagrams, verified URL links.

In most cases, plain text suffices, and you can link to a html page with
your more fancy markup. What are verified URL links?

For example, program listings should not be wrapped, not even
snippets. Pieces of a post need to be marked with what they are so
they can be better handled, e.g. choose a fixed/variable font,
wrap/nowrap, plain/html.

A verified URL link is a link that the accepting server verifies as
valid before accepting the post. The idea is to mainly to prevent
typos or errors when people quote URLs off the top of their heads.

I don't think you could do this with pure upward compatibility.

There are different levels of anonymity/history, e.g.

1. like me, I use my real name, real website, but I don't post my
email address in easily harvestable form. If it were easy to do, I
might include a PNG masked version of it in my posts.

2. People who use just a first name or some pseudonym. They have a
reputation with that name. They should have squatter's rights on it,
and protection from others counterfeiting their posts.

3. ninjas, mostly spammers who post once and you never hear from them
again. But they could be people saying things against people who might
kill them if they were tracked down, (mostly outside North America).
They don't want any way to be traced.

Readers should have the right to classify posters, so they can give
priority to people who are hiding less.

It's hard to imagine that an impersonator could succeed at worsening my
reputation.

It's easy to remember that one didn't.

The "hard to imagine" sentence was humor, in case you need it pointed out.
The best comedy carries a nugget of truth.
