Computer programmer, computer scientist, and
computer software engineer are increasingly fancy
names for exactly the same job. Computer scientists
are not scientists, computer software engineers are
not engineers, all are simple software technician
jobs.

However, if you used the "scientist" appellation,
your chance of unemployment is half that of calling
yourself a "programmer", while if you call yourself
an "engineer", you chance of unemployment is less
than one third of your chance of being an unemployed
"programmer".

Go figure.

Or rather, go "doesn't figure".

So, what did you work on over at Ebay?
Did they use Sybase?

Back end server software providing database searches
for the front end client GUI software, mostly
debugging it to stop it bringing down the whole site
so often that crashes were a public embarrassment.

I did very little development work. Debugging is a
usual chore given to the new arrival in a team, as
it is a good way to be a contributor while learning
the (here massive) software suite's working.

I also modified their build software to cut build
times from a whole workday to about 90 minutes,
which made me a hero to the software developers, not
so much so to the maintainers of that build
software.

No. Oracle. Sybase is IIUC too fragile for that
sized work-load.

So far as I understand, everything written in C++
that was in use when I was working there has been
replaced with a Java version. At least that was the
announced intention, I don't know if they managed to
accomplish that goal, and I've long ago lost
interest.

This is my post. It's one of the best posts on the net.
I know what you're asking yourself 'did he post 5 or 6
times'? Well in all the confusion I kinda lost track
myself. So you gotta ask yourself 1 question 'do you
feel lucky, huh do ya punk ...'
