Initially I'd feel cramped with a 10 line reading-window.
Do we need the wide-open feeling ?
Then I notice that usually I don't need more than about 4 lines.
Would a reader of 10 lines instead of 25 restrict reading, other
than more often need to scroll ?
But often I just scroll 1 or 2 lines at a time in any case.
What would be good goog-phrases to search for the existing
research on these questions ?
I hate *pfd files which imitate the newspaper 'multiple
narrow column format'. But this has evolved over decades,
so it must be good for fast reading, or something ?
Although I notice that no text books use it.
Is this because narrow columns lead to fast/superficial
reading -- no good for study ?
Thanks for any feedback,
== TIA. |

I notice it primarily when reading the license agreements displayed when
installing programs. The window is often small, the text long and often
significant amount of text is capitalized -- a prescription for reading
difficulty.

That's an interesting question. I know that lines that are too long are
more difficult to track when reading.
You might do a search for "typography optimum column width" (without the
quotes) or something similar. Without typography you get lots of hits on
web design.
